Villa del Casale, Piazza Armerina

La bellezza di svegliarsi (o andare a dormire) all'alba è una delle mie cose preferite...

Peccato che data la mia pigrizia io non ci riesca quasi mai. Ho detto quasi, perchè per partire e andare a Piazza Armerina ce l'ho fatta!

Piazza Armerina è una cittadina in provincia di Enna. 

Io ci sono andata per visitare la Villa del Casale, una villa romana perfettamente conservata e recentemente restaurata per permetterne la buona fruizione da parte di turisti! La parte migliore sono sicuramente gli affreschi, con dei colori che rasentano l'incredibile, mosaici artistico-allegorici e un ambientazione da sogno tutto intorno!

Too bad because of my laziness I do almost never succeed. I said almost, because to leave and go to Piazza Armerina I did it!

Piazza Armerina is a town in the province of Enna.

I went there to visit the Villa del Casale, a Roman villa perfectly preserved and recently restored to allow good use by tourists! The best part is definitely the frescoes, with colors that border on the incredible, artistic and allegorical mosaics and a beautiful ambience all around!

All'ingresso principale si arriva tramite un sentiero che costeggia le vasche termali, e dagli scavi archeologici è possibile vedere anche tutto l'impianto che permetteva di riscaldare l'acqua delle piscine e di far passare l'acqua calda sotto ai pavimenti della villa ( una specie di riscaldamento a pavimento).

L'ingresso è ampio e si può vedere che una volta tutte le pareti erano riccamente affrescate con colori accesi e non è difficile immaginare la bellezza che esprimevano quelle stanze arredate e decorate con gusto.

At the main entrance you arrive via a path that runs along the thermal baths, and thanks to the archaeological site you can also see the whole system which was used to heat the water in the pools and which made hot water to pass under the floors of the villa (a kind of floor heating).

The lobby is large and you can see that once all the walls were richly painted with bright colors and it is not difficult to imagine the beauty of expressing those rooms furnished and decorated with taste.

Uscendo nel giardino si vede chiaramente il colonnato che circonda il cortile, affacciato sulle colline siciliane, con una vista che potrebbe farvi trovare la pace dei sensi...

Going out into the garden there is a patio, surrounded by columns and overlooking the hills of Sicily, with a view that might make you find the peace of mind ...

Il proprietario della villa era probabilmente un governatore della sicilia, il quale è rappresentato il un mosaico sul pavimento dell'ingresso insieme ai suoi schiavi, simbolo di potenza e ricchezza. Non che il  cortile con l'immensa fontana potesse lasciare pensare a un poveraccio =)

Tutto intorno al cortile principale il pavimento è adornato a motivi geometrici che contengono le teste di animali cacciate in quel periodo, alcune anche molto fantasiose dato che alcuni animali non erano mai stati visti!

The owner of the villa was probably a governor of Sicily, which is represented on a mosaic on the floor of the entrance along with his slaves, a symbol of power and wealth. Not that the immense courtyard with fountain could leave to think about a poor man =)

All around the main courtyard of the floor is adorned with geometric patterns that contain the heads of animals hunted at that time: some of them are very imaginative because some animals had never been seen!

Nel bagno della matrona della casa si nota un mosaico che la ritrae insieme alle sue ancelle mentre va ai bagni, due delle figure sono ipoteticamente i due figli, uno che la cerca toccandole il braccio e l'altro che rifugge il tocco della madre.

Anche in questa zona della casa quello che salta all'occhio è sicuramente l'intensità dei colori, per noi abituati a vedere le statue romane bianche è quasi uno shock scoprire la tavola cromatica usata dagli artisti dell'epoca!

In the bathroom of the matron of the house is a mosaic that shows her along with her ​​maids as she goes to the bathrooms, two of the figures are hypothetically two sons, one who seeks touching her arm and the other that eschews the touch of his mother.

Even in this area of the house what catches your eye is definitely the intensity of colors, we are accustomed to seeing Roman statues white: is almost a shock to find out the color table used by the artists of the time!

All'interno della villa vi era una mostra di arte contemporanea, devo dire che non mi è piaciuta per nulla, tranne per il pezzo dedicato a Dedalo e Icaro..

Ed ecco uno dei miei spazi preferiti, i mosaici con le 4 stagioni e le scene di caccia. Nelle scene di caccia sono rappresentati tutti i passaggi che venivano messi in atto per cacciare le fiere da portare al circo massimo e tutti gli animali sono raffigurati con la massima cura per impressionare chiunque guardi il pavimento sul quale cammina.

 A dire il vero le scene di caccia sono 2, la piccola caccia (riferita alla caccia locale, con animali e ambientazione mediterranea) e la grande caccia (animali selvaggi ed esotici e ambientazione tropicale). Ed esiste anche una scena di pesca in cui i cherubini alati sono intenti a mostrare tutte le tecniche di pesca conosciute.

Inside the villa there was an exhibition of contemporary art, I must say that I did not like at all, except for the piece dedicated to Daedalus and Icarus ..

And here's one of my favorite spaces, the mosaics with the 4 seasons and the hunting scenes. The hunting scenes represent all the steps that were put in place to hunt fairs to bring to the Circus Maximus and all the animals are depicted with the utmost care to impress anyone who watches the floor on which they walk.

Actually hunting scenes are 2, the little hunt (referring to the local hunt, animals and Mediterranean environment) and the great hunt (wild and exotic animals and tropical setting). And there is also a fishing scene in which the winged cherubs are intent on showing all fishing techniques known.

  

 C'è poi la stanza della musica, in cui i mosaici sono più rovinati ma che un tempo ospitava le cerimonie religiose e gli intervalli musicali che il padrone di casa voleva offrire ai suoi ospiti. Anche qui è presente una fontana e una fenice che risorge dalle sue ceneri è il capolavoro della pavimentazione.

La sala delle ragazze in bikini è forse la più celebre, in realtà le ragazze non sono persone qualunque ma sportive, campionesse di vari sport come il lancio del disco, la corsa con il cerchio etc etc..

Then there is the music room, where the mosaics are ruined but that once housed to host religious ceremonies and musical intervals that the homehowner wanted to offer to its guests. Even here there is a fountain and a phoenix rising from the ashes is the masterpiece of the pavement.

The room of the girls in bikini is perhaps the most famous, in fact the girls are not ordinary people but sporting champions of various sports such as throwing, running with the circle etc etc. ..

 Naturalmente tutta la villa vale la pena di essere vista, io non posso nemmeno provare a riprodurre la magnificenza delle opere che vi sono installate. 

Ma condividere con voi un po della meraviglia che ho provato è già qualcosa!
